John MatayaJohn is a professional planner that is passionate about creating economic development strategies for communities at the local and regional level.  John’s area of expertise includes data analysis and working on issues at the intersection of economic development, transportation, and housing at the local and regional level.

John understands strategic economic growth needs on a variety of levels.  John worked as a Regional Planner managing regional plans, research studies, best practice manuals, and creating spatial growth tools for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.  In this role, John prepared Region Forward, the region’s comprehensive vision plan and created strategic growth tools for the region.  This included developing a new version of the region’s activity center map and developing the Place + Opportunity plan, a spatial growth tool which continues to assist the region in making long-term investments leading to sustainable economic development outcomes.

Recently John finished a two-year stint working in India as an Economic Officer for the U.S. State Department where he was monitoring economic trends and supporting American business interests on technology, science, economic, trade, health and environmental issues.

John holds a MS in Urban and Regional Planning from University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his spare time, John enjoys photography and traveling with his family.
